MINIMALISM AND BEYOND

Seen from behind, Rock Settee appears to be a boulder, shaped by nature.  Seen from the side and the front, however, the natural granite has been partially shaped by man, with a segment cut out to form a settee. Despite the "missing" piece, it is still possible to imagine the rock when it was untouched and to conjure up the irregular constitution of the former surface. This object invites different readings – visually, when contemplating the piece as a sculpture, and physically, when visitors sit upon it.

Rock Settee shares features with other minimalist works in the current installation: it interacts with space, questions the object character of art (rock, sculpture, or furniture?), and uses the precision of industrial techniques in its manufacture.
